School Is In Session
There is no better teacher than your own life experience. We will learn more about ourselves by giving attention to our lives than we can from any outside source. By noticing how we react to our daily experience we will gain enormous incite into who we are, the beliefs we have about ourselves and others, and how we can change our beliefs to create a more peaceful state of mind. It may sound simple, but to look within yourself takes a tremendous amount of courage. Confronting the core beliefs we have will cause an upwelling of fear that could cripple anyone's efforts. But when that fear is confronted and understood the inward journey becomes easier. So, just take a step back and let your life experience teach you. Remember that you never journey alone and take comfort in that knowledge.

The 1st
I wish I could give you some clear, concise explanation concerning the purpose of this blog, but being as I have no idea what will be written here, I can't. I thought an illumination of the reasons I chose An Exceptional Life as the title of my blog might be a satisfactory introduction. As some of you might know, I recently annulled my short marriage with my wife. I can't even begin to write everything that I learned through this experience, but one thing I did learn, and will write about now, led to the creation of this blog and the selection of the title. I think including a quote from the movie Dan in Real Life will succinctly elucidate my reasoning:
"But if we are really honest with ourselves, most of the time our plans don't work out as we hoped. So instead of asking our young people (and I would say ourselves), "what are your plans? what do you plan to do with your life?", maybe we should tell them this: plan....to be surprised."
Just now, as I wrote this quote, I realized it could be interpreted that I espouse giving up on life, plans and everything we hope for; that this is the 'life lesson' I learned through my marriage experience. This is not the case. I believe it is necessary and healthy for us to have hopes and dreams, and to work towards those. What I desire to espouse is what Dan said, "plan....to be surprised." I never dreamt that my marriage would end the way it did. It was an exception to the plans that I envisioned for myself. It is from this, exceptions that I discovered the name for this blog. We all have plans and sometimes they don't work out as we had hoped. It is these exceptions to our plans that proffer the opportunity to make our lives exceptional. I am a believer in the adage that everything happens for a reason; there is meaning in the exceptions to the plans we make. Discovering that meaning is key to enhancing our understanding of ourselves and the paradigms that exist in our lives. So, plan....to be surprised.
Exactly how I will attempt to write with that purpose in mind isn't exactly clear at the moment. For now I will write down the significant experiences that I have; whether that is everyday or just once a month is yet to be determined. I hope that what I share in this blog will help at least one other person. If what I write accomplishes this then I will be content.
Until next time friends : )
